2018 FIELD DEMONSTRATIONS – COVER CROP
From 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm *Weather permitting
The 2018 Big Iron Farm Show field demonstrations will focus on cover crops. NDSU Extension is collaborating with Cass County Soil Conservation District and the Fargo Area Natural Resources Conservation Service to demonstrate impacts of cover crops on soil conditions. The cover crop demonstration is a five-acre plot on the Big Iron demonstration field located directly south of the Red River Valley Fairgrounds.
The Soil Conservation District planted a variety of cover crops after harvest of the spring wheat during mid-August. The cover crop plot is divided over tile drained and non-tiled field areas. This is a multiyear project with the primary objective of comparing the impacts of cover crops on soil conditions on tiled and non-tiled land. The individual cover crops will be replanted annually on the same plot.
NDSU Extension personnel are coordinating a cover crop education program scheduled for each afternoon during the Big Iron Show on September 11-13. The afternoon education programs will begin at 1:00 pm each day. Scheduled speakers include farmers and personnel form the NRCS, Soil Conservation, seed companies and NDSU.
